Finding the Missing Middle - Strengthening of Micro-entrepreneurs in the Philippines

The foundation for Management Innovations, Inc. (FEMI, Inc.) as an organization based in the Philippines, deals with beneficiaries that have enterprises beyond the subsistence level. These are enterprises that exist for a minimum of 3 years rather than with starts-ups. These are businesses that have achieved some sort of market acceptance and survived the rigors of infancy. FEMI focuses on businesses at the level of small industries because these have far greater potential for employment generation. It is in this regard that FEMI provides customized trainings and consultancy services to its beneficiaries.

In 2011, FEMI trained and assisted 259 entrepreneurs in various business. Ninety-five per cent (95%) of them sustained their operation and 69% showed improvements in their operational systemps such as finance, production, marketing and human resource management. Their goal of increasing their capitalization to benefit the assisted beneficiaries surpassed the target of Php14.4 million and reached Php16.8 million. In its effort to attract more investments, FEMI produced a video presentation which showcased the best practices of their assisted entrepreneurs. It also launched a book that highlighted their business model.
