Urban Socialized Housing and Management of the Environment in the Philippines

Decent shelter is a basic human right. It instills the value of human dignity to the beneficiaries and will encourage them to strive harder. In partnership with SELAVIP, Pagtambayayong - A Foundation for Mutual Aid, Inc. (PFI) is one our partner assisting five peoples organizations comprising 775 urban poor families in the coastal slums of Cebu City to acquire their own house. Some beneficiaries are the victims of fire that gutted their homes others are squatters living in very poor housing. PFI organized them into associations in Barangays Mambaling and Duljo, Cebu City to continue PFIs initiatives in pursuing intergrated community development of neighborhood and barangay.

In 2011, PFI was able to accomplish the construction of 33 decent houses which are permanently occupied. The beneficiaries are provided with a house consisting of two walls on each side only and a roof. Once a family transfer in the house, they will have to make their own improvment by installing the front and back walls of the house. In addition, 703 families were awarded with certificate of Lot Entitlement, a prerequisite document for the processing and acquisition of the National Free Patent Act. This document allows the beneficiaries to acquire their title for free so long as they are a resident of the area for more than 10 years.
