Urban Poor Organizational Strengthening

Community organizing in the urban poor is a challenging job. For PFI, they started in 2011 with a community that they organized into one federation (Duljo Integrated Neighborhood Association -DINA) which comprises 7 member organizations. PFI strengthened the federation and the four old people organizations formed in 2008 with a set of functioning leaders and participating members. They were organized into various committees to address and mobilize around their varouis socio-economic needs.

Thus, training in organizational management was needed to equip them with the right skills to manage their respective associations. In 2011, 293 persons were trained in various organizational capacities from the five people's organizations. These trainings included sessions about the following: financial management, organizational management, community organizing skills for PO leaders, gender and the environment, leadership and values formation, simple accounting and bookkeeping.

Results of the trainings included the 1) community action plan and 2) mobilization for material requests from various government agencies.

PFI and the PO beneficiaries linked to the following: All r-Up for marketing of materials produced from recyclables, Office of Councilor Margot Osmeña for the construction of the multi-purpose building, Office of the Congressman Tomas Osmeña for the filling materials, Provincial Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP).
